Preventive Dentistry

The key to preventing dental disease is regular attendance. How frequent is different for everyone! Book a dental consultation in our Sydney CBD dental practice now, and avoid future dental problems.

Consider that you use your teeth forcefully many times every day. If you want them to last all your life, the best thing to do is have them checked regularly. Waiting for things to go wrong is always more complicated and expensive to fix in the long run.

How often should I go to the dentist?

Everyone is different.
A young adult exposed to fluoride throughout their life, with few or no fillings, need only go every year for a checkup. An older person with more fillings, or a history of gum disease, should go at least every six months. In all cases, regularity is essential. Monitoring small problems, and preventing them from becoming big problems, is the basis of preventative dentistry.

Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?

Bleeding is a sign of gum infection.
If you haven’t been to the dentist in a long time, you may have a buildup of hardened plaque (called calculus) around the gum line of your teeth. It causes chronic gum infection (gingivitis). Bleeding as well as swelling and redness is a sign of this.

Bacteria cause bad breath.
Everyone’s mouth harbours millions of bacterial cells which live in the nooks and crannies in and around teeth. Removal of these bacteria and their by-products (called plaque) is thus the best way to improve bad breath. It involves regular brushing and flossing, as well as regular dental checkups.

Are electric toothbrushes better than ordinary toothbrushes?

Yes! An electric toothbrush has a circular brushing action.
It is the most effective way of removing plaque while minimising trauma and damage to the teeth and gums.
